January 26, 2019—John 4:14

But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
– John 4:14

Thoughts on Today’s Verse:

From the dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, Jesus told us that whoever drinks of the water that He bestows shall never thirst. Here “thirst” refers to our spiritual condition but not physical needs. The water mentioned in this verse is not the water that we drink, but the way of life from the Lord.

We know that Jesus was nailed to the cross as the eternal sin offering. He ended the Age of Law that mankind needed to give sacrifices because of their sins. The work of Jesus brought new hope to those people who still kept the law. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me” (Jhn 14:6). When Jesus was doing His work, He told people some paths of practice, such as how to confess and repent, how to bear the cross, how to be patient and humble, and how to love others. Those who accepted Jesus’ work could gain the work of the Holy Spirit, while those who resisted Him lived in the darkness.

Now, many brothers and sisters have seen that the church doesn’t prosper as before. Many believers love the world and grow cold in faith. The pastors and elders have nothing to preach about and the brothers and sisters cannot gain supply in their lives. Though they often pray to the Lord, they cannot feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. This reminds us that when Jesus did His work, the temple became desolate because it had lost the work of the Holy Spirit, and turned into a den of thieves where money was exchanged and livestock were sold. The same goes for our present church state. I read the words of Jehovah God in the Bible, “And also I have withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain on one city, and caused it not to rain on another city: one piece was rained on, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered” (Amo 4:7). Indeed, where there is the work of the Holy Spirit, where our spirit will not thirst. So, shall we quickly search for the city with rain?
