No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
– Matthew 6:24
Thoughts on Today’s Verse…
“Money is first” and “money makes the world go round” are satanic poisons that each of us lives by. We think money gives us everything as well as happiness. So we pursue money recklessly and even believers in God are no exception. In this verse, the Lord Jesus teaches us that no man can serve two masters. That is, we can not seize God in one hand and the riches in the other. Such manner of faith is not approved by God. The Lord Jesus once taught His followers, “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26). “He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matthew10:37). “So likewise, whoever he be of you that forsakes not all that he has, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). From the Lord’s words we can see God’s will: God hopes that we obey and satisfy Him in all things, and should take satisfying God as our principle when there is a clash between our personal interests and God’s requirements.
